The Holistic Survival Kit for All Calves

By Will Winter, DVM

We strongly recommend that all livestock producers keep these emergency products on hand. The logic is like that of buying a fire extinguisher. You hope you never need it, but if you do, it’s good to have it in the barn or workshop and ready to use! We call it a “calf kit” but really these are medicinal and nutritional tools that we use for any CALF, LAMB, GOAT KID, PIGLET, FOAL and even POULTRY. There are times when adult or breeding animals may need these tools as well, hence the other name for it; “Livestock Emergency Kit”. Most sick or debilitated animals get run down from any sort of stress such as shipping, handling, new forages, weaning, exposure to other animals, harsh weather or other environmental conditions. This is when pathogens and parasites take over. Even before there are symptoms, such as coughing, going off-feed or loose manure, there could be infection and fever. Timing is everything. Use these products at the first hint of anything wrong. Maybe it’s a certain look in their eyes, drooped ears, or just standing off to the side. Each kit can treat up to 20 calves or the equivalent. And if you run out of any one product, which is likely, they are each refillable individually. The price for the entire kit is discounted, but even if you save just one calf, it will more than pay for the entire kit. Overcoming problems in the first 12-16 weeks of life are not only likely to save the life of these animals, but it also tends to prevent permanent damage to the lungs, rumen, or digestive tract of those animals, so the rewards come back throughout the life of the animal. By 24 weeks, the development of the digestive tract of calves is basically set for life. What you have then, is what you will have throughout their entire life.

These are all medicines that I feel every rancher or livestock owner should keep on hand, just like a fire extinguisher as I mentioned before. When the occasion arises for treatment on the farm, there’s no time to go shopping then. Days, hours, sometimes even minutes make the difference between success and failure.

PDQ RESCUE: Recommended for all animals that are being shipped, handled, weaned, orphaned, or who may have been exposed to any stressful situation or risk of infectious disease. The ingredients include water-soluble organic carbons, water-soluble kelp, vitamin C, along with Zinc and Copper. If possible, and for best results, begin treatment several days before any expected stress or exposure. When used as directed, PDQ is safe for all livestock, horses or pets of any age or condition. Available in 11# sealed buckets.

NATURE'S GREEN: A mixture of nutrients, primarily a complex probiotic concentrate, and Gut Acidifier (the pH is only 2). We use it to get the digestive tract back into condition and to make it strong enough to repel the pathogens that cause scours, dysentery, or coccidiosis. This helps repopulate the gut with non-pathogens. Can be mixed with milk, replacer, or any feed, or may be given orally via stomach tube or syringe. Repeat daily as needed based on symptoms. Available in 4 oz. bottles.

CW LACTIC CULTURE BLEND LIQUID: Another excellent super-probiotic concentrate sold in bulk form for use when treating large numbers of calves or livestock. Also used to get the digestive tract back into condition and to make it strong enough to repel the pathogens that cause scours, dysentery, or coccidiosis. Can be mixed with milk, replacer, or any feed, or may be given orally via stomach tube or syringe. Repeat daily as needed based on symptoms. Available by the quart. (One-gallon mixes perfectly with one 55 gallon barrel of Lassahol).

JTR NUTRA-ADE: An energy concentrate that provides an oral source of therapeutic levels of Vitamins A, D3 and E, as well as all the important B-vitamins and minerals. It is available by the quart and the dose for incoming calves is only 3-5 cc daily. It is given to cows about to calve at a rate of 25 cc just before and just after calving. It can be drenched or mixed with milk or replacer.

LASSAHOL: A “super tonic” nutrient liquid that is so strong that a full dose is only 1 ounce per 1000 pound animal per day. The liquid base of organic molasses has been fermented by non-GMO microbes to a 17% alcohol content. It contains therapeutic levels of zinc, copper, cobalt, iodine, high levels of vitamins A, D3, and E, as well as the essential amino acid thiamine. Can be mixed into silage, or feed concentrate or spread over stored forages. Available as 5 or 55 gallon containers.

PURE VITAMIN C POWDER (SODIUM ASCORBATE): This form of vitamin C does not irritate the stomach lining like ascorbic acid but does even more work. We believe it to be a powerful immune tonic, tissue healer and overall enhancer of health for virtually any disease, injury or chronic condition. This is the strongest form of ascorbic acid made. Available in 5 lb bags.

SPECIAL NOTICE:

All of these products, unless noted otherwise, have a very long shelf-life with careful storage. Keep them dry and out of strong sunlight or temperature extremes. Freezing, while not recommended, will not destroy the action of the products, but extreme heat could render them slightly less active. A sustained temperature over 140 degrees F can begin to destroy enzymes as well as the biological microbes.
